Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism: And Other Arguments for Economic Independence

A spirited, deeply researched exploration of why capitalism is bad for women and how, when done right, socialism leads to economic independence, better labor conditions, better work-life balance, and yes, even better sex.

In a witty, irreverent op-ed piece that went viral, Kristen Ghodsee argued that women had better sex under socialism. The response was tremendous - clearly she articulated something many women had sensed for years: The problem is with capitalism, not with us.

Ghodsee, an acclaimed ethnographer and professor of Russian and East European studies, spent years researching what happened to women in countries that transitioned from state socialism to capitalism. She argues here that unregulated capitalism disproportionately harms women and that we should learn from the past. By rejecting the bad and salvaging the good, we can adapt some socialist ideas to the 21st century and improve our lives.

She tackles all aspects of a woman's life - work, parenting, sex and relationships, citizenship, and leadership. In a chapter called "Women: Like Men, but Cheaper", she talks about women in the workplace, discussing everything from the wage gap to harassment and discrimination. In "What to Expect When You're Expecting Exploitation", she addresses motherhood and how "having it all" is impossible under capitalism.

Women are standing up for themselves like never before, from the increase in the number of women running for office to the women's march to the long-overdue public outcry against sexual harassment. Interest in socialism is also on the rise - whether it's the popularity of Bernie Sanders or the skyrocketing membership numbers of the Democratic Socialists of America. It's become increasingly clear to women that capitalism isn't working for us, and Ghodsee is the informed, lively guide who can show us the way forward.

Despite the click-bait title, the book contains a lot of important facts, stories, and statistics about the status of women’s rights under different economic systems. It is a short, worthwhile and compelling read, and will contribute to the interesting and important conversation about what role the state can play in addressing systemic inequalities. It’s also really funny in parts.

I normally would not have read something with such an attention starved title but I saw excerpts on Twitter and was moved by how logical the arguement was. It's a compelling stance on how women with financial freedom make better and more fulfilling choices in life using examples from several countries and political systems. It seems a simple enough concept but she really dug in with this one. I'd recommend it, especially to female friends.

An excerpt from the book: " The woman returned to work after the birth of her baby and tried her best to keep up with the demands of a small start-up. But she was nursing. And the baby kept her up at night. She would attend meetings bleary-eyed and unprepared. She called in sick when the nanny didn't show. She found a place in a good nursery, but if her son got sick, they sent him home. Her husband traveled for business, and she had no family in the area. Jake, always the optimist, believed things would improve once the child was older. He even offered to babysit in a pinch. His star employee managed to hold on for six months. Then she quit. That night Jake called me to share the news. Dejected and frustrated, he told me, "I'm never hiring a woman again." "But she's just one woman," I said. "Not every woman is going to make her choice." "There's no way my boss will let me," he said. His voice was low. "And it's the baby thing. I can't be sure of anything about any employee, but I can be curtain that a man won't have a baby." I think I hung up on him. But it really wasn't Jake's fault. What could he do in a system that provides no support for women when they become mothers, that forces women to choose between their careers and their families?"It's hardly possible to imagine any sane person who could protect the system described in the excerpt above. For those who rave about same size penises: the book is not about socialist penises, it's not even about sex (despite clickbait title). This book is about exploitation of women in a capitalist society. For those who rave about greedy low lives: did you guys try to read about socialism anything besides mindless fascist propaganda?

An excellent book --on a subject that not many cannot afford to write on. Thoroughly researched and a new perspective in a world where one can hardly make any neutral, never mind positive *informed* comments on socialism. I would recommend.

This was a great read and a fantastic history of socialism in Eastern Europe as well!

Nearly 3 decades after the fall of Berlin Wall, some socialists still push commie propaganda. This book is clickbate (duh, sex!) and is completely divorced from reality.

For a book you can read in an afternoon, Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism (and other arguments for economic independence) packs a real punch. Ghodsee's academic bona fides are apparent in the deftness of her argument, but absent in her style. It's really fun to read.In fact, it's the "other arguments" that make up the majority of the book. In addition to sex, Ghodsee tackles how unregulated capitalism exploits women at work, as mothers, and in their (our) emotional lives. But this is not just a catalogue of complaints. In the final chapter, Ghodsee offers concrete suggestions of how we can improve our lot. It is an excellent primer on socialist feminism and offers great suggestions for further reading. This book reminds us that so many of our frustrations are not because we're insufficient, but because our economic system stacks the deck against us, and together we make some change.

The author was writing this book by studying the life in Socialist countries in her office. She never lived in a socialist country. I would recommend her to go Cuba or Venezuela and spend a a few years and then write a book.I lived in Eastern Europe, and the life under socialism was so horrible, that no man or women had better sex compare to capitalist countries. Everyday struggle to get food, to get basic necessities, not to mentioned that women could not get any hygiene products.I'm amazed that people given 5 stars and great reviews. These people most likely never lived in socialist countries either. It's all utopia.
